Never really care about any of the characters - Apart from a certain unbelievable coincidence (as mentioned in other reviews) which surely could have been replaced with something cleverer, the plot for this is reasonable if unremarkable. However what struck me was the tone of the book. From the start it reads in a dry, reporting the facts tone, which is all well and good when setting up the characters and situstion, and makes it seem nicely plausible. After about 50 pages you wonder when he ll get to the exciting writing. The answer is, never. The whole book continues in this tone, and as a result I didn t really care about either of the two main characters, or what happens. If the end had been the opposite result, it wouldn t make any difference, the reader would still just shrug and forget it very quickly.A mostly credible job of plotting, and credit for giving the Afghan character an understandable, fair and sympathetic background, but let down by total lack of interesting writing.
Not usual standard but still worth reading. - In terms of pace this one takes an age to get going. It is rich in background detail as is the author s norm, and descriptive as ever too.Somehow it lacks the punch of his other work.It is as if he lost the passion for it about two thirds of the way through.Still very much worth reading, but not his best work.
The Afghan - Formulaic stuff here, but that is what We buy Forsyth for, once again, the research and the detail are immense, and unlike his previous Major Mike Martin offering the Fist of God,wholly believable, not his best but far from his worst
Again well researched but well short of authors best, - Frederick Forsyth s novels are extremely well researched and give the reader a fairly accurate and interesting account of history and the world of covert operations and war. However the plot and characters in this novel are not as interesting or convincing as his previous novels. There is also one coincidence that is so outrageous that you feel like throwing the book at the wall. Read his other books first as I would hate you to think that this books standard is all what the author is capable of.
one of the millions of the same book - I am fed up of the Muslim terrorist blowing up some places. Very bias book with lots of argumentative informations. What has happened to the creativity of Forsyth. Has he lost his touch? Dont waste your time with this one.
